How to choose

For configuration files, logs and source code on Windows, see Notepad++. Choose a text editor by its search tools, syntax highlighting and encoding support rather than document formatting features.

Keep a copy before editing a configuration file. If text looks corrupted, check its encoding and line endings before saving. A lightweight editor can suit a low-end PC, although very large logs and extra plugins still consume memory.
